howfen spaces: new commission from open eye gallery

I’m delighted to announce that I’ve received funding from Open Eye Gallery to pursue a micro-commission here in my community of Westhoughton which explores the loss of green spaces in our town.

Over the next few weeks in collaboration with the community, I’ll be:

  • Instigating a creative conversation about the local environment

  • Recording and documenting what might be lost/gained

  • Sharing photography skills

  • Providing a creative outlet for sharing hopes and fears

  • Exploring what that creative outlet might be with those taking part.

As this is a research and development short project, I’m using it as a test bed to try four different socially engaged interventions:

  • Mindful photographic runs with members of the local running group

  • Open call-outs for community members to submit contributions and stories of their own

  • Site-specific creative conversations and activity with families living next to one of the current developments.

If you’d like to take part please share your photographs and thoughts via the project submission page.

You can follow the project progress over on my Instagram, via #howfenspaces and at my online temporary exhibition.

Over the next two years Open Eye Gallery is working with partners locally, nationally and internationally to develop a programme of residencies, exhibitions and events exploring climate change and local environment impacts. I’m really thrilled to be involved.
