RICK HUGHES
Drums and percussion for The Deadbeats + Rick Stix
”Before the “c” word really caused global devastation, the last proper gig was with The Deadbeats at Winter Gardens, Blackpool in early March. I remember it being a great gig with everyone dancing have a great time. Maybe everyone was subconsciously treating it as their last “blowout” because we went into lockdown around a week later!
As a professional musician the toughest thing is that it’s your livelihood and still having no idea whether this will ever return. A whole industry in a state of suspended animation with no end in sight. I miss the band and playing with the guys. I suppose it’s the sense of belonging to something and creating something fantastic together, then seeing crowds reactions. Definitely won’t take anything for granted again, that’s for sure.
My fantastic family have been awesome and kept me from losing my mind on a few occasions. Mind you, me and my wife came close to madness homeschooling our 8 year old! I’ve also sank a lot of my time over the many months into successfully expanding my drum tuition from my teaching space, creatively called “The Drum Room.” Along with that I also delved into home recording and have done recording sessions with whoever and whatever comes my way.”
