how to prepare for a brand photography shoot

Booking your brand photography shoot with me is an investment, so to make sure you feel prepared and relaxed during your session, here’s a few tips that might help.

1.    Keep things simple - wear something you feel comfortable in and actually like: hopefully you’ll be using the photographs for a long time! Choose an outfit that reflects your usual style and approach – are you formal/informal? Quirky or conventional? When choosing what to wear think about the words you would use to describe yourself and work approach/style – are you casual, elegant, chic, formal, creative, classic?

2.    Wear accessories if you like, and perhaps match these with your brand colours.

3.    Don’t choose the day of your shoot to try a new hairstyle or make-up – go with what you know and what makes you feel comfortable.

4.    Patterns can look great on you, but they can be distracting in a photograph. So avoid wearing anything overly patterned or stripy. If you’re not sure, pop them on and have a look at yourself in the mirror - be honest about whether you are more drawn to the outfit or your face!

5.    Think about how you might pose and practice – this could be as simple as looking down, looking at the camera, looking away, turning to the side, looking over your shoulder, touching your hair, spinning, laughing, walking away, crossing your legs etc. Think about what facial expressions match the personality you’d like to convey.

6.    The big one - avoiding double chins – we all have them and they’ve a tendency to appear on photographs whoever we are! Practice pushing your chin forward and down, almost like you’re holding an orange underneath.

7.    Think about props you want to bring with you or would like in the background. Mobile phone, laptop, notebooks and pens – whatever represents your work.

8.    Take time immediately before your session to get ready and prepare so you don’t feel rushed. It’s important to be in a good mindset so you can relax.

9.    Remember throughout the session to think about what you want your photographs to communicate – the idea of the shoot is to bring out your values and connect with your potential client – so keep that in mind.

10. Have fun! I’m very much about documentary style photography, so I want to make sure we’re capturing the ‘real you’ and your personality. People buy people, right?
