Piano tuner + Piano teacher + Pianist
“When Covid restrictions were first announced, I was in denial about the severity of the situation. At the time I was undertaking a Master’s degree in Music Industry Management and Promotion and had recently gone solely self-employed as a piano tuner and teacher. Given the situation, I had to adapt my research to embrace the Covid related innovations within the music industry. It was stressful to say the least, to be undertaking a research project in the midst of a pandemic, where the arts and artists were suffering, with no end in sight. Each day huge shifts in policy made it near impossible to tie down any facts or figures. It was very disheartening (I quit three times). However, I’m happy I saw it through and I even managed a distinction.
Fortunately, my piano teaching and tuning business has grown throughout the pandemic. I think it’s because with more free time, people turn to their creativity. Also, people working from home are more able to accommodate piano tuning appointments. I feel very grateful to have had wonderful, loyal students ranging from the age of 6 to 60+ all determined to adapt to zoom lessons when necessary. It’s been heart-warming to witness student’s continued dedication to learning the piano, despite the many obstacles they faced. We’ve had successful online music concerts and students have adapted quickly to ABRSM’s new remotely recorded exams. Now more than ever I feel a deeper sense of appreciation for students who are pursuing a musical path.
On a personal note, in anticipation of a bottleneck demand for future weddings, I’m currently rehearsing set lists as a solo pianist. This is a return to performing live I am most definitely looking forward to.”
